IRS warns taxpayers of charity scams following recent hurricanes; provides tools to help people verify legitimate groups

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, the Internal Revenue Service today cautioned taxpayers of scammers who use fake charities to gather sensitive personal and financial data from unsuspecting donors.

Scammers commonly set up fake charities to take advantage of peoples’ generosity during natural disasters and other tragic events.

“Many people want to help survivors and their families by donating to charities,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “Too often, criminals take advantage of would-be donors’ kindness by stealing money and personal information from well-meaning taxpayers. You should never feel pressured by solicitors to immediately give to a charity. It’s important to do the research to verify if they’re authentic first.”

Little River ShrimpFest Raises $10,000 for Hurricane Helene Relief

The Little River Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center is proud to announce that the recent Little River ShrimpFest raised nearly $5,000 on-site in support of Hurricane Helene relief efforts. In a show of solidarity with festival attendees and the community, the Chamber’s Board of Directors has generously agreed to match these donations, bringing the total contribution to $10,000.

This donation is being made to Samaritan’s Purse, a respected organization known for its disaster relief efforts, to support their ongoing work aiding those affected by Hurricane Helene. “The outpouring of support from our festivalgoers was truly heartwarming,” said Jennifer Walters, President/CEO. “By matching these donations, our Board wanted to ensure that our community’s generosity is amplified and that we are doing our part to help those in need.”

The Little River ShrimpFest is an annual celebration that brings the community together in support of local businesses and organizations. This year, with the impact of Hurricane Helene still being felt across affected regions, the festival became an opportunity to rally around a cause that has touched the lives of so many raising $4,925.93 on site and through online ticket sales.

The Chamber extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated at the event and made this generous contribution possible.

The MBREDC Industry Awareness Class News
The Industry Awareness Class began Day 1 of their first class in the Conway area learning about the training available at HGTC and CCU.

HGTC’s Advanced Manufacturing Center’s 25,000 sq. ft. facility in Conway is home to Advanced Welding TechnologiesMachine Tool Technology, and Machine Tool Operations programs.

CCU offers 115+ undergraduate and over 30 graduate-level (doctoral educational, specialist, masters) major fields of study including specialized concentrations across six academic colleges.

Seeing the training in action is a highlight of the class. We stopped in at Tucktec, where lightweight foldable Kayaks are manufactured.

Next stop: Vulcan Materials Company, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates—primarily crushed stone, sand, and gravel—and a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials, including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete. Thanks to a partnership with RJ Corman Railroad, these aggregates are transported by train, freeing up our highways of heavy trucks.

Tyson Sign Company, our next stop, gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the sign manufacturing business. They can create a product from the initial design stage and see the project through to the installation.

The last stop for the day was at Canfor Southern Pine Saw Mill. Canfor is one of the world’s largest producers of sustainable lumber, pulp, and paper.

We visited so many great places and it was only Day 1! Visit along with us each month to learn about industries in our community. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and an interview with Liz Callaway.
